Historic parks and gardens represent a cultural heritage, which changes over time, that requires constant attention. They constitute places where architecture, sculptural and artistic elements, the presence of water in all its forms, merge with vegetation, creating a complex and vital whole; here human activity constantly dialogues with nature towards an aesthetic vision in constant evolution. As living witnesses of history and traditions, they tell the taste, philosophy and science of the times in which they were created, conquering a peculiar position in the field of cultural heritage. They do not simply represent green spaces but real complex monuments that require dedicated restoration and conservation methods.

In the wake of this awareness, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR Mission 1C3, Investment 2.3) provided for a specific investment dedicated to the census and cataloguing of historic parks and gardens. The intervention aims to consolidate the identity of places and the quality of the landscape, with a view to urban regeneration and an impetus to environmental sensitivity that favors the birth of new ways of cultural and tourist enjoyment.

The Directorate General for Cultural Heritage, as part of the PNRR investment, has carried out the scientific cataloguing of 70 public and private historic parks and gardens, identified in the regional territory through a census carried out with the coordination of the Ministry and in agreement with the Superintendencies of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape and the Regional Secretariat for Sardinia. The assets have been catalogued through the PG 4.01 standard, published by the Central Institute for Catalogue and Documentation (ICCD). The results of the activity, consisting of accurate descriptions edited by industry experts and equipped with extensive photographic equipment, are made available through the Sardegna Cultura portal and in the National Catalogue of Cultural Heritage. The selected assets include public and private parks and gardens of different types, which present elements of historical, artistic, architectural, botanical and landscape interest based on the criteria indicated by the Ministry of Culture: open to the public and usable in a systematic way, located in peri-urban and extra-urban settings, subject to protection measures, endowed with intrinsic value due to peculiar characteristics or the link with the context, to which scientific literature recognizes particular value, which have not been subject to previous cataloguing. The chronological scope of the sites dates back to the sixties of the twentieth century, but without excluding more recent sites with a precise identity or recognized as such by accredited historiography or restorations and restorations of historic gardens carried out even in recent years.
