The Castiadas Agricultural Criminal Colony complex was established in 1875 by the Ministry of the Interior as a prison colonization project for the purpose of hydraulic and agricultural remediation in a malarial and swampy territory of the Sarrabus. As part of the colony, prison buildings, production facilities (workshops, carpenters, stables, warehouses) and the director's villa, which constitutes a representative component of the complex, were built. Over time, with the transformation of the colony and the downsizing of prison functions (the colony ceased its activity between 1952 and 1955 and passed to the Authority for Land and Agrarian Transformation in Sardinia ETFAS) many agricultural and infrastructural functions were maintained, abandoned or adapted. The garden of the Villa of the Director of the former Criminal Colony of Castiadas is accessible through an iron gate, connected to a gate that delimits its perimeter along the main road. The portion in front of the villa is configured as a representative garden, characterized by large lawns bordered by ornamental hedges. A row of cypress trees interspersed with palm trees accompanies the driveway that leads to the side wing of the garden, where there are olive and pine trees, and which ends with a terrace-belvedere overlooking the surrounding landscape. In the back, a small stone staircase allows access to a lower level area, once intended for productive use as a citrus grove and orchard. Today, few tree specimens remain of this plant, flanked by palm trees and olive trees that testify to the area's past agricultural function, and a border of cypresses along the perimeter.

The critical value of the garden of the director's villa lies in its implicit testimony: as a representative element in the framework of a colonic-prison complex, it embodies the relationship between administrative buildings, prison authority and productive landscape. Characterized by a composite physiognomy, an expression of the dual ornamental and productive function that characterized the original plant. The front part, representative, stands out for the width of the lawns and the presence of pruned hedges that delimit the spaces, giving order and symmetry to the composition. The back portion, accessible via a stone staircase, preserves the remains of the ancient production plant with traces of citrus groves and orchards. The redevelopment and philological reconstruction of the garden, in particular of the productive area once dedicated to an orchard, would constitute a valuable contribution to understanding the integrated structure of greenery in the context of nineteenth-century agricultural penal colonies in Sardinia.
