In 1897, in the lower part of the area resulting from the demolition of the Castle and the construction of the new Barracks — already the fulcrum of the ancient Piazza Castello — a small public garden was built. The green space had flowerbeds and rich shrub vegetation, and was enclosed by an elegant wrought-iron gate. Defined as “Square”, the garden, designed according to a typical Umbertine taste, also helped to mitigate the sharp difference in road height.
Three years later, in 1900, the monument to Giuseppe Cavallotti was inaugurated, which was placed in the center of the garden.
The garden, which occupies the northwestern perimeter portion of Piazza Castello, in the historic center of Sassari, is a small ornamental garden characterized by irregular flower beds populated with tree and shrub species. The centrepiece of the composition is the memorial to Felice Cavallotti, placed inside a small central flowerbed. The paved paths and the curbs that delimit the flower beds contribute to the overall design of the space. The most represented tree species is the dwarf palm.
From the vegetation, which is generally dense and low, some larger specimens emerge, including an araucaria.
Interesting aspects
The small garden has a free composition. The flower beds are shaped by internal paths, characterized by a sinuous pattern, which define the overall design of the space. The vegetation consists of shrub species, among which bougainvillea and plumbago stand out for their colors. The most common species is the dwarf palm. The formal ensemble, defined by predominantly low volumes, alternated with larger specimens that introduce vertical variations within the garden, produces an aesthetically effective sensation of pleasure.
