The Monserrato Park originates from a vast agricultural and delightful estate formed during the 19th century, in an area then located on the western edge of the town of Sassari. During the 19th century, the property underwent progressive transformations that led to the definition of an articulated landscape park, in which the pre-existence of agriculture was integrated with a romantic green design, characterized by sinuous paths, viewpoints, architectural elements and an articulated water system. The Park is located on a hilly area that slopes gently into the countryside. It is spread over a vast extension divided into several levels, exploiting the natural slopes of the land and organically integrating green spaces, paths, steps, architectural artifacts and ornamental elements. It is configured as a unitary set consisting mainly of three macro-areas. The first consists of a historic garden with an ornamental landscape, inside which there are open spaces with a mixed design. The second area looks like a large wooded park, inside which there are wooded areas and sparser lawn areas. The third includes productive areas, attributable to the presence of historic agricultural areas. Access to the park is through an opening through a monumental entrance. Immediately beyond that, there is the main pool, flanked on the short sides by steps that lead to a lower level, into which the main path is centrally inserted. Inside the park there are numerous artifacts of historical and architectural interest. To the south, near the church of Monserrat, there is a viewpoint overlooking the Nymphaeum basin, to the right of which a staircase connects to the cross path that leads to the water temple. To the north-west, in an elevated position, are the belvedere basin and the hunting tower, connected to each other by a staircase. The trees, the hedges, the shrubs shaped like topiary and the mixed rows of oaks, contribute decisively to the perception of the park, defining plant landscapes, perspective views and areas of transition between the more orderly garden and the areas with a more naturalistic imprint. The water system, consisting of springs, canalizations and basins, is of particular importance, which performs both a functional and a scenographic function, contributing to the definition of spaces and visual axes.

The Monserrato Park is a rare example of a historic urban landscape park, in which the design of the green, the orography of the site and the architectural emergencies contribute to defining a landscape of particular historical, aesthetic and environmental value. It is characterized by a carefully studied composition, in which the trees, often arranged in pairs or rows, frame the surrounding landscape and accompany the eye to selected views. In the same way, architectural elements help to carve out and guide panoramic views. The viewpoints and the different elevations of the land combine to complete an articulated and dynamic composition, which is configured as a succession of environments and points of view, offering a varied perception full of elements of surprise.
