The Garden Under the Walls, located at the foot of the eastern walls of the historic Castello district along Viale Regina Elena, was inaugurated in 2014 following a redevelopment of the area of the former municipal nursery. The area underwent subsequent functional transformations: from a municipal nursery to a sports field, then a construction site for the consolidation of the walls in the 1980s, until the redevelopment started in 2011. The project extended the Covered Walk of the Bastion of Saint Remy downwards, reconnecting the monumental axis designed by Ubaldo Badas in the 1930s and involved the recovery of the plant, the creation of accessible paths and the inclusion of sculptural works. In 2014, the work was awarded the national award “The City for Green”, as a virtuous example of urban regeneration, accessibility and sustainability. The garden was named in 2017 after the brothers Giuseppe and Vittorino Fiori, Sardinian journalists and intellectuals. The green area, of about 6,500 m², is characterized by a composition of terraces on two levels, which exploit the natural slope of the land at the foot of the historic walls of the Castello district. It has a contemporary landscape, with large grassy areas, trees of Mediterranean species such as ficus, carob trees, Mediterranean shrubs and ornamental hedges that delimit the paths. The garden, which is accessed through two entrances, one of which is monumental, designed by the architect Ubaldo Badas, is spread over two main levels, adapted to the slope of the hill, connected by a ramp that serves as a walk and a rest area with benches. The lower level, wide and flat, houses a central avenue paved with stone on whose sides there are meadow surfaces enriched by sculptures and stone tubs that function as fountains, with ornamental hedges that create paths and define perspectives, highlighting the areas with the most important trees such as the monumental carob tree. A long tree-lined avenue leads to the Bastion of Saint Remy's Covered Promenade. The garden is enriched by sculptural works by Pinuccio Sciola: “Submerged City”, “City of the Future”, “City of Salt”, “Stone Seeds” or “Tied Stones”. The sculptures represent three historical aspects of the city of Cagliari. Santa Igia, the submerged medieval city; the perched city of Castello; the “city of salt” with its typical white pyramidal mounds. The upper level, arranged along the walls of the Castle walls, acts as a belvedere and panoramic path, enriched by benches, light trees (palm trees, oleanders) and an elevator that connects the garden to the Bastion of Saint-Remy. The entire project is designed to ensure maximum accessibility even for people with disabilities, with paved paths, ramps, elevators and services. The garden also houses a small outdoor theater, integrated into the landscape composition, used for events and cultural activities.
