The garden surrounds the Castle of Sanluri, the only medieval fortress in Sardinia that is still habitable. The Castle of Sanluri, built in 1355 on the initiative of Peter IV of Aragon, was built in a strategic position along the border between the Arborense and the Catalan-Aragonese domains. In the following centuries it passed to various noble families until its purchase, in the first decades of the twentieth century, by the Villa Santa family, who began a work of overall redevelopment. In this context, the outdoor area, originally intended for practical-defensive functions, was reinterpreted as a representative garden, in line with the taste of the time. The interventions introduced in the 20th century marked the transition of the site from a military garrison to a historic residence with an adjoining green space, accentuating the scenographic component and giving the complex a cultural and symbolic role in the memory of the local community. Subsequent botanical integrations in the contemporary age have helped to enrich the reading of the garden as an integral part of the museum itinerary. The main green space is presented as a framework for the monumental complex. There is a historic carob tree and a row of cypresses planted along the perimeter by the Villa Santa family, owner of the castle since the first decades of the twentieth century, when the lawn plant was also built in the center of which a statue of the Victories is placed. More recent interventions have enriched the area with medicinal and aromatic plants and species of the Mediterranean scrub, located both near the external gate and along the walls of the castle. The presence of historic trees, ornamental essences and Mediterranean vegetation helps to integrate the medieval layout with the landscape, giving the garden a role of aesthetic and functional enhancement of the architectural complex. Inside the castle there is a small courtyard with flower beds and a well once useful for domestic water supply.
Aspects of interest
The garden is interesting for the presence of historic trees and for the process of transformation from a functional space to an ornamental context, as evidence of the evolution of the use of the castle. The inclusion of aromatic and Mediterranean species today increases their educational and landscape value in relation to the monumental complex.
