The Villa Asquer complex has ancient origins: the oldest nucleus dates back to the 16th century, with buildings that were expanded during the 19th century by the will of the Asquer family, in particular Gabriele Asquer dei Visconti and his nephew Francesco, who promoted the remediation of the surrounding land and the planting of olive groves, in addition to the construction of an agricultural farmhouse. After a long period of decay and abandonment, in the seventies of the twentieth century the area was purchased by the entrepreneur Francesco Morelli, who started an extensive recovery and transformation project. The villa and the park have been the subject of enhancement interventions, with the opening to guided tours, educational activities and cultural events.
The park covers an area of about 23 hectares. The villa is the fulcrum around which ornamental gardens, wooded areas and scenic spaces are organized. The landscape organization alternates formal areas, with hedges and grass carpets, with natural sectors such as the pine forest and the Mediterranean forest, integrating more than two thousand palm trees and other exotic species alongside native vegetation. The layout of the spaces is radial, with main paths that branch off to the different areas of the park and connect gardens and wooded areas. The plant masses, distributed in compact or filar nuclei, define visual backdrops and spaces of transition, while water elements and sculptures act as focal points and orientation within the composition. Fountains and sculptures, arranged along the paths, enrich the system and emphasize its aesthetic and symbolic dimension, giving the complex an eclectic physiognomy of historical importance.
The general physiognomy is marked by the presence of the historic nineteenth-century pine forest, preserved as its original matrix, around which avenues, ornamental areas and representative spaces have been organized. Starting in the seventies of the twentieth century, the area, once destined for agro-forestry functions and then abandoned, has been transformed into a scenic and experimental park, conceived as a place of refuge and contemplation. Within this green plant there are monumental fountains, allegorical sculptures, collections of palm trees and other exotic species, which create visual contrasts with Mediterranean vegetation.
