The garden of Villa Mosca developed at the same time as the construction of the villa in the first decades of the twentieth century, as part of the prestigious residential growth along the Alghero coastline. From the beginning, it has been characterized by an ornamental plant with large sinuous flower beds and a selection of Mediterranean and exotic species, including palm trees, agaves, aloe and succulents, in line with the Art Nouveau taste of the time and with the need for resistance to salt. The general layout of the garden remained substantially unchanged during the twentieth century. It constitutes the external property of the homonymous villa, located on the seafront of Alghero. The area is spread over a trapezoidal lot, characterized by a first flat stretch and a second steeply sloping sector, with a panoramic view of the coastline. The garden is divided into three main green spaces, distinguished by morphological configuration and plant density. The space located on the south and southwest side of the villa, has an ornamental layout defined by irregularly shaped flower beds, enriched by isolated shrubs and small plant groups and a carpet full of seasonal flowers. The second space always consists of irregular flower beds characterized by more compact vegetation, formed by shrub groups of different heights and trees that create a visual and functional filter between the different areas of the garden. On the eastern side there is a meadow area, an open and continuous space, defined at the edge by vegetative borders that delimit its boundaries while maintaining a wide perception of space. The elements of the garden are distributed in relation to this organization. The villa is in a central position with respect to the main travel routes. The paved paths connect the entrances with the villa and with the various sectors of the garden, accompanied by pitosphorus hedges and vegetable gardens that regulate the interior views. The plant structure is completed by the borders of pitosporus and palm trees, the trees of mixed species, arranged along axes and margins to reinforce the spatial scan. In the garden there are various and mixed botanical species based on their origin, of Mediterranean and exotic origin. Among these, a significant specimen of Phitolacca dioica emerges, most likely belonging to the original structure of the garden.
Aspects of interest
The garden has a mixed composition, with alternating open spaces and denser plant textures, consistent with the panoramic character of the villa and with the coastal context. Characterized by the coexistence of large surfaces of seasonal flowers, compact shrub groups and specific tree presences or distributed in small alignments (trees, borders). The entire vegetation has a prevalence of Mediterranean species adapted to the coastal context. The view from the Dante waterfront is particularly spectacular, especially during the flowering period of the species present in the garden, just as suggestive are the views that open from the complex to the sea and to the town of Alghero.
