Mount Minerva, which today extends into the territories of the municipalities of Villanova Monteleone, Padria and Monteleone Roccadoria, was granted as a fief to the naval captain Basilio Todde with the title of Count, on 18 November 1755, by Carlo Emanuele III of Savoy, King of Sardinia. Upon his death, the fief passed by will, dated November 15, 1776, to his nephew Nicolò Maramaldo Todde, a royal army officer, who assumed the title of Count of Minerva and resided both in Villanova Monteleone and in the Minerva palace in the town of “Su Palatu”. With the abolition of the feudal regime, introduced by the Aragonese in Sardinia, the fiefs were incorporated into the state property or assigned to the new municipalities that replaced them. The Monte Minerva Rose Garden was designed in 2002 and inaugurated in 2005. It is a botanical garden dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of ancient varieties of roses, coming from different geographical areas and historical periods. It is located in an area of great environmental, landscape and historical-archaeological value. The rose garden is located inside the nursery of the Monte Minerva forestry yard. Its construction is part of a larger project to enhance the territory and the forest yard, which involved the transformation of part of the nursery into a real botanic garden. It covers an area of about 550 square meters and has a pseudo rectangular planimetric development on a flat plot divided into two staggered levels: one dedicated to medieval roses and the other to the most recent varieties dating between the 18th and the beginning of the 20th century. Originally, the collection had 20 varieties of ancient roses: 7 dating back to the medieval period and 13 dating from the 18th century to the first decades of the 20th. There are also some species of wild botanical roses from Sardinia and the Italian peninsular territory. The rose garden currently houses 38 varieties of roses.
Aspects of interest
The Rose Garden project is explicitly inspired by the formal criteria of the Italian garden, highlighting orthogonality, visual symmetry and orderly composition of plant elements. This rigorous and structured approach surprises the visitor because it reveals itself only at the end of a gradually degrading path, creating a clear contrast with the natural and spontaneous character of the surrounding landscape. From a compositional point of view, the garden is spread over two distinct levels, each organized according to a precise geometry. The spaces alternate between full and empty volumes, reserved for planting roses. This alternation gives rhythm and order to the entire system. On the perimeter, in particular on the south-west and south-east sides, the garden is bordered by hedges of Olea europaea var. sylvestris (olive tree), which perform a dual function: on the one hand containing it, and on the other it is ornamental, contributing to the integration of the garden into the landscape context.
