The Orto dei Cappuccini in Cagliari is an urban green space of monastic origins, now transformed into a public garden, located close to the Buonweg hill and the Roman Amphitheater, in a landscape and archaeological context of great importance. Its origins date back to 1595, when the Capuchin friars founded the first convent of the Order in Sardinia, in the area now between Viale Merello and the hill of Buonmino. The garden was built as a hortus conclusus for food and therapeutic use, according to monastic tradition, and intended for the cultivation of medicinal, fruit and vegetable plants for the sustenance and care of the sick. In 1867, following the suppression of religious orders, the convent and its garden became property of the City of Cagliari, which used them as a nursing home. During the 20th century, the area fell into a state of neglect and progressive decay. Starting in 2015, the Municipality has promoted a landscape and archaeological recovery project concluded with the reopening of the vegetable garden to the public as a historic urban garden: the ancient terraced structure has been restored, the paths have been reorganized, the stone walls have been restored, the original essences (citrus, aromatic, fruit trees) have been restored and the underground paths have been partially visible. Over time, the area has maintained a terraced structure bordered by stone walls, consistent with the original layout dating back to the end of the 16th century, when Capuchin friars cultivated medicinal and fruit plants for medicinal and food use. The garden develops around a complex underground network consisting of Roman quarries later transformed into tanks for collecting rainwater: among these, the so-called “Vittorio Emanuele Cistern”. The area, divided into quadrants and dirt walking paths, is organized into sections that house an orchard, an educational garden, a collection of aromatic and medicinal plants, a rose garden and large lawns. Aspects of interest
The site is today a significant example of urban reuse and integrated enhancement of historical, botanical and archaeological heritage, and testifies to the functional evolution of monastic gardens from the convent context to civic and collective use.
