The botanical garden of Monte Arci is located in a peripheral area northwest of the town of Masullas. It was built to complete the area belonging to the former Capuchin Convent, built in the middle of the 17th century between 1643 and 1655, and as an interconnection with the “Monte Arci GeoMuseum” located inside the former Convent itself. Church and convent were closed in 1866 and confiscated by the Kingdom of Italy with the law suppressing religious orders and corporations. The area owned by the monks was about 15,000 square meters, today it has been almost entirely preserved. In the 80s and 90s, the City began a long restoration project, recovering the entire complex. The recent botanic garden project, which affects part of the ancient convent territory, aims to conserve, protect, enhance and disseminate some of the most important naturalistic aspects of Monte Arci. The initiative also stems from the desire to redevelop a place of historical and artistic importance, returning it to the community through the care and arrangement of public green spaces. Inaugurated in 2020, the project was carried out in phases. Inserted in a pseudo rectangular area, it is divided into two main spaces that can be defined as macro-areas. The first consists of the actual garden that can be further divided into five spaces divided into five spaces divided into irregular flower beds, divided according to the botanical collections they house, species present in the territory of Monte Arci: garrigue area, Mediterranean scrub area, riparian zone, flower beds for medicinal plants, forest area. An additional circular lawn area is intended to host events. The second macro-area, intended for recreational and entertainment activities, houses some games for children, a pergola and an area currently being completed. The area is characterized by the presence of a semicircular seat (semi-amphitheater) and a circular basin with a fountain. Located along the perimeter to the west, an ancient ferris wheel well with a tank.
Aspects of interest
The composition of the green organized in vegetation spaces re-proposes the natural environments characteristic of the territory of Monte Arci. The different types of plants are distributed in such a way as to recreate coherent micro-landscapes, promote the understanding of local ecosystems through a dedicated information path. The paths gradually accompany the visitor through the various botanical environments, improve the usability of the space and offer different points of view on the plant landscape. Along the routes there are explanatory signs, which illustrate the characteristics of the species and habitats, facilitating orientation and enriching the visiting experience.
