Dal 1899, anno in cui il cinema fece il suo esordio in Sardegna grazie ai Lumière, che attraverso il regista Francesco Felicetti girarono Voyage du Roi Humbert Ier en Sardaigne, fino agli anni Venti, l'isola vide solo poche testimonianze cinematografiche. Si trattava per lo più di rari film, girati o ambientati in Sardegna, come Cainà di Gennaro Righelli, La Grazia di Aldo De Benedetti e Cenere di Febo Mari, quest'ultimo l'unico film con Eleonora Duse. Tutti questi lavori, direttamente o indirettamente, si ispirarono all'opera di Grazia Deledda.
