The park is located on the homonymous hill of Monte Claro, known for having given its name to the pre-nuragic culture of Monte Claro (ca. 2400-2100 BC) defined on the basis of ceramic materials found in excavations conducted in 1905 in a natural cavity located on the same hill. The name was adopted to identify an original cultural facies from the recent Neolithic period, widely spread in Sardinia. From the mid-19th century until 1998, the area hosted the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital, of which significant traces still remain, including the perimeter walls, tree-lined avenues and various buildings, including the historic Villa Clara, the residence of the health director and now home to the Emilio Lussu Metropolitan Library. Starting in the nineties, the complex was gradually transformed into a public park thanks to an extensive landscape and functional restoration project, promoted by the then Province of Cagliari (now the Metropolitan City). The redevelopment has maintained the historical traces of sanitary use and the original structures, integrating them with new routes, green areas, sports facilities and cultural spaces. The Monte Claro Park, about 25 hectares, has a varied landscape composition: vast grassland areas, wooded areas with pine forest and mixed forest. Part of the grass areas are used as play areas for children, sports areas and fenced dog areas. The park areas are connected by a system of dirt or gravel paths. Starting from the main entrance, the main avenue and an orthogonal and curvilinear network of paths and paths connect the central lake and the various areas with the various entrances, viewpoints and themed areas. The presence of contemporary works of art is significant, such as the sculptures by Pinuccio Sciola, known as Sound Stones, which welcome visitors at the main entrance, the Holodomor sculpture by Armandino Lecca and the Logo fountain, at the top of the main avenue, consisting of a large circular pool with a central gush, which presents a design inspired by motifs of the pre-nuragic culture of Monte Claro, symbolically recalling the historical identity of the place. The surface of the green area is divided into large areas open to grass, wooded areas and scattered tree groups. The vegetation is typically Mediterranean, with a predominance of oak trees, domestic pines, strawberry trees and shrubs such as myrtle and mastic. The vast lawned areas and those with ornamental designs offer multifunctional spaces for social and leisure activities and for sports activities. The wooded areas with pine forest and mixed forest are deliberately left more natural, with simple dirt trails and spontaneous vegetation.

The Monte Claro Park represents an important urban green lung that integrates historical, archaeological and naturalistic values. Its transformation from a psychiatric hospital to a public space is a significant example of recovery and social inclusion. The variety of landscapes, sports and recreational facilities and the reference to pre-nuragic culture give the park an important cultural, ecological and social value in the metropolitan context.
