The area of the Public Gardens of Sassari has existed since 1837. Its definition was refined in the following years, a period in which the city underwent profound changes due to the demolition of the ancient walls and the construction of new public and private buildings outside the original nucleus. The garden was built in several phases: in the 1870s the first area to the north, then the second area was added and, in recent times, the complex was completed with the third area. The Public Gardens of Sassari occupy a large area of the historic center. They are divided into three areas built at different times, distinct and transversely separated by urban streets. The first macro-area, to the north, has distinctly ornamental characteristics. The second, located centrally between the two, and the third, to the southeast, are equipped respectively with games for children and for public transport. All have similar characteristics, flowerbeds with an ornamental design bordered by sinuous paths. The first macro-area, the oldest, is between Via Tavolara, Corso Margherita di Savoia, Corso Angioy and Viale Mancini. Characterized by a single green space, entirely covered by dense vegetation of large and valuable trees, distributed in rows of oak trees along the paths and inside the flower beds. Inside there are the fountain of Saint Francis with the statue and the central fountain, around which there are four statues depicting the seasons. The second macro-area extends between the Garibaldi Hemicycle, Corso Margherita di Savoia, Via Tavolara, Viale Mancini and the initial stretch of Viale Italia. Like the first, it has curvilinear paths that delimit tree-lined flower beds, organized around a central area equipped with games for children. Along the perimeter of Via Mancini, a fenced area houses the Eugenio Tavolara Craftsmanship Pavilion surrounded by a system of irregular flower beds. The third space, the most recent, is located between Viale Italia and Via Berlinguer. It repeats the same flowerbed composition as the first two areas and is crossed by the surface subway line. Inside there is a monumental area characterized by a contemporary installation. The trees present in greater numbers are holm oaks, palms, linden trees, plantains, pines.

The public gardens of Sassari have been recognized as an asset of public interest because of the uncommon beauty of the vegetation and flora and because they constitute an attractive green area within the perimeter of the city.” They integrate with the urban and landscape environment and perform an important social function. The regular space, well defined within the urban fabric, contrasts with the internal composition formed by irregular paths converging towards two main poles: the central fountain and the area intended for children's games. The plant composition is predominantly dominated by typical Mediterranean species. In all areas there are large trees, with a marked prevalence of oak compared to other tree species.
