Sardinian culture at the crossroads

The creation of the Kingdom of Italy pushed Sardinia even further towards the cultural center of gravity of the Italian peninsula. Participation in the unification and creation of this new nation created a situation of extreme dynamism on the island, but it also highlighted its structural weaknesses from a socio-economic point of view.
The privatization of land (better known as the “law of closures”) turned into an immense business of social discrimination that further impoverished the population. High taxation, the protectionist policy in favor of industrial Northern Italy, mining colonization, non-existent internal and external transport, the poverty of the countryside made the situation always difficult.
On the other hand, membership in a unitary state gave advantages. In particular, elementary school became a widespread reality and literature began, slowly but surely, to become a common heritage. Illiteracy declined and Italian became a language whose knowledge, more or less precarious, spread even to the popular strata.
As a result, modernity is conveyed in this language on the island, while Sardinian language tends to decline, even if it is still largely the majority of the population. Many valuable writers adopted the official language of the 'Italy of Nations'.
