Military architecture

With regard to the study of medieval castles, despite the objective difficulties of analysis and interpretation that ruined situations and the complexity of historical stratifications entail, it is nevertheless possible to draw some descriptive lines of the island's situation.

The observation of the wall walls reveals a variety of cutting stones and a homogeneity of techniques comparable to those used in the church buildings of the island. The ichnographic type (relating to the plant) and the details related to military needs do not differ from the Italian plants, in Tuscany in particular, nor from the pattern of greater diffusion on the European continent, of the keep with one or more master towers, perched on top of a hill and protected by an anthemural that follows the altitude trend.

From a historical point of view, it is possible to distinguish between fortresses built in the early Byzantine period (6th-7th century), castles with a judicial structure (11th-12th century) and others restored or built by Genoese and Pisan lords after the fall of the magistrates of Cagliari and Torres, shortly after the mid-13th century.

A further distinction can be made between fortresses in the coastal belt and others located along the borders between Giudicati and, starting from the mid-13th century, along those between the Giudicato di Arborea and the lands infested by families of Ligurian or Tuscan and - from the 14th - Catalan descent. To these are added the fortification works of the main urban centers, with a more articulated type due to the need to intervene on a context already configured from a building point of view.
