Festivals are ritual activities that structure time within a social context. They enable a collective perception of a break in the flow of time, contrasting with the experience of individual, everyday time. They are characterized by rituals and behaviors that differ from the norm—regarding clothing, food, activities, the observance or suspension of duties and prohibitions, reciprocity, and the opportunity for collective leisure and entertainment.

The section dedicated to festivals and special occasions is divided into three categories:

  • Religious festivals: covers the evocative rituals of Holy Week, festivals dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and devotional and patron saint celebrations.
  • Traditional festivals and local fairs: covers traditional rituals and major local festivals.
  • Carnival: offers a collection of in-depth features on the island's traditional Carnival celebrations.
