The term Eneolithic, composed of the Latin term “aeneus”, bronze, and the Greek word “lithos”, stone, designates the Age of Early Bronze and Stone, in reference to the first arsenic bronze productions, produced in alloy with arsenic.
An alternative denomination for the same period is that of Chalcolithic, composed of the Greek words' khalkos', copper, and 'lithos', stone, which designates the Copper and Stone Ages.
The acquisition of the ability to extract and process metals, in particular copper, is the new, important technological advance that marks the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of a new chronological and cultural phase in human history.
In Sardinia, the exploitation of island copper begins, located in particular in the Iglesiente, in the territory of Alghero and in the important Funtana Raminosa field in the territory of Gadoni.
The possibility of using metal is being used for the production of weapons and jewelry, but it has not yet supplanted the use of chipped stone in the production of tools.
Also at this stage, the trend, already emerged during the Neolithic Age, towards the social, political and economic complexity of the human groups attested to on the island continues. An important stimulus in this regard comes precisely from the increased complexity that characterizes the operational phases: identification of deposits, cultivation of mineral veins, production of artifacts.
