The transition from the Middle Paleolithic to the Upper Paleolithic is generally connected to the appearance and spread of the Homo sapiens sapiens species, that is, those human groups that have physical characteristics similar to those of today's man.
Regarding the origin of this species, two hypotheses are proposed. The first that attributes to Homo sapiens sapiens a recent African origin and a subsequent migration to the northeast; the second according to which the origin occurred independently in Africa, Asia and Europe starting from the human species already existing in
these geographical areas. Some of the archaeological discoveries that occurred in the Corbeddu cave in Oliena refer to the Upper Paleolithic. These are animal bones and fragments of a jaw and other human bones. The dating of these finds fluctuates between 20,000 and 6,000 years before Christ, thus also crossing over into the Mesolithic. Another discovery of artifacts, framed in the Upper Paleolithic, took place in the town of Santa Maria is Acquas, between Sardara and Mogoro. These are flint tools dating back to around 13,000 years BC
