A high-level architectural civilization

Our perception of the cultural entity that today we call “nuragic civilization” is strongly conditioned by the architectural elaborations that this civilization has been able to produce: the well temples, the tombs of the giants, the “megaron” temples and, above all, the nuraghi.

These monuments are in fact so numerous and architecturally present in the Sardinian landscape that they have convinced scholars of the opportunity to use their name to define the entire civilization that produced them.

The indisputable fact is that the cultural system that we call “Nuragic civilization” felt the need (for reasons that have not yet been fully clarified) to engage in the impressive effort to erect a significant number of refined and complex monuments, eventually achieving an architectural enterprise unprecedented in the history of the island.

This enormous constructive effort was a peculiar way to respond to the new needs determined by social, political, economic and religious development, in short, in a “cultural” word achieved in Sardinia at this time, and was preceded by a series of experiments, including protonuraghi, however, built also in the Nuragic

age.
