In Sant'Antioco the Punic (or Carthaginian) people, at least since the late sixth century BC, buried their dead within underground chambers created by digging the soft tufa which forms the local substructure. La necrópolis de San Antioco ofrece una excelente oportunidad para conocer la civilización fenicio-púnica establecida en Cerdeña desde el siglo VIII antes de Cristo: explorándola, se puede obtener una gran cantidad de información y noticias. En San Antioco los pueblos púnicos, al menos desde finales del siglo VI a.C., enterraban a sus muertos dentro de auténticas cámaras subterráneas extraidas de la excavación la roca de toba blanda que forma el subsuelo local.
