Villanova Monteleone, Appito archaeological area

The park is immersed in a beautiful uncontaminated landscape of the island's NW coast, with cork and oak woods and an expanse of mountains that overlook the sea.
The archaeological area includes a complex nuraghe, the Appito nuraghe, located at the foot of Mount Cuccu, facing the sea, three-lobed, collapsed externally, but with three large rooms that remained intact; a village attached to the nuraghe, of about 200 huts; another nuraghe, a mono-tower; a tomb of giants and two small dolmens. In the surrounding area there is also a megalithic circle and a temple 'to Megaron'.
The excavations of the village have uncovered largely non-communicating huts, which overlook various courtyards. They have a circular or quadrangular plan and are built with rows of overlapping stones tied with mud mortar and wedges.
As attested by the findings of jars, millstones, sharpening stones, mortars, pestles, cotes, flint and obsidian shards, bronze sickles, ashkoid vases, planks, pans, spindles and loom weights, as well as houses, the huts were places for storing foodstuffs and various activities: cooking pots, processing wool, milling cereals. In some cases, cultural functions are also not excluded.
The structural and stratigraphic data, as well as the study of the materials found, allow, at the current state of research, to date the complex between 900 and 800 BC, the beginning of the Iron Age.

History of excavations
The first excavation campaigns, in 2001-03, revealed fifteen huts in the village attached to the Appito Nuraghe.

How to get
There From Villanova Monteleone you cross the town and continue along the SP 12 in the direction of Bosa. After about 10 km, turn into the road that leads to Monte Cuccu and continue for another 2 km to the site.
