Selargius, Church of San Lussorio

Selargius, Church of San Lussorio

Selargius, Church of San Lussorio

The territory of Selargius has been intensely inhabited since prehistoric times. In the historic center, the Romanesque church of San Giuliano is preserved. The one of San Lussorio, on the other hand, is located between Selargius and Monserrato, perhaps on the site of the ancient village of Pau, where there was a Victorian monastery.
The church of San Lussorio, which dates back to the 12th century, has come to us in a state of neglect and has been restored only recently.
The floor plan has three naves. The walls are made of limestone. The front part of the N side and the façade remain of the original structure. The frame of the building is divided by a base and sturdy corner pillows.
The end of the navatella N originally had a semi-tympanum under which a series of monolithic arches ran on decorated beds. Two pilasters, connected in arches, marked the space in three mirrors.
In the middle part of the façade there is an arched portal surmounted by a raised exhaust arch. In the axis, a mullioned window with a central column opens. At the peak, a sailing bell tower rises with an pointed light. There is also a tannery with accommodation for ceramic basins, another decorated with graded rhombus and a third sculpted with a texture of star motifs.

History of studies
For the church of San Lussorio, you can consult the entry 'Selargius' (1849) by Vittorio Angius, in the Casalis' Dictionary ', followed a century later by the article by Maria Freddi (1961). The 1984 contribution contained in the volume by Anna Saiu Deidda, in 1989 the volume by Renata Serra on Romanesque architecture in Sardinia. In 1993 Roberto Coroneo dedicated a page to the church in his volume on Romanesque Sardinia.
