Carbonia, Museum of Sulcitan Paleo Environments “E.A. Martel”

The Museum of Sulcitan PalæoEnvironments “E. A. Martel” (PAS/Martel), founded in 1972 by the “E. A. Martel” Speleological Research Group in Carbonia, and became a Civic Museum in 1996, has been housed in the Serbariu Great Mine complex since 2007. It is a naturalistic museum dedicated to the Geology and Paleontology of Sulcis-Iglesiente.
The central theme of the Museum concerns bioevents, geoevents and ancient environments recorded in rocks in the South-West of Sardinia, with particular attention to fossils.
The exhibition itinerary is organized chronologically starting from rocks and fossils from the Cambrian (540 million years ago) to the remains of Homo Sapiens. Visiting the Museum is an excursion through time through geological ages, discovering the evolution of life, geography and past environments on Earth, with particular attention to the events of South-Western Sardinia.
The “Bioevents, Mass Extinctions and Dinosaurs” section represents an interlude that opens a look at topics of great interest to the public.
The “Paleobiodiversity” section houses part of the collections of the historian Édouard-Alfred Martel, integrated with newly acquired fossils, and constitutes an overview of the various groups of organisms of the past documented by finds from different parts of the world.
Scenographic is the life-size reproduction of the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex, at the center of the exhibition itinerary, which captures the attention of adults and children.
Finally, the dwarf mammoth, the group of Prolagus skeletons and the remains of a small Macaca monkey are of great curiosity.

Why is it important to visit
the unique museum in Sardinia for speleology, it offers, with an educational approach, a time excursus through geological ages to discover the evolutionary history of life on Earth with particular reference to the events of Sardinia.
