Cagliari, Church of Santa Lucia della Marina

The church of Santa Lucia is of very ancient origin. The area in which it is located, in the immediate vicinity of the port, has always accentuated its importance in the socio-religious context of the city, in all phases of its development. Its existence is in fact already witnessed before the Pisan foundation of the Castle, which took place at the beginning of the 13th century. The first documentary attestation dates back to 1119 when, together with other assets, it was granted to the Benedictine priory of San Saturnino, belonging to the monks of San Vittore di Marsiglia, who had been present in Cagliari since the end of the previous century. In 1263, the church was then mentioned in the report of the pastoral visit carried out to Sardinia by the Archbishop of Pisa Federico Visconti. With the Catalan conquest of 1326 and the consequent urban reorganization of the port district, which in those years took on the characteristics it still retains today, the building was inserted in the dense urban fabric of the city, at the intersection of three streets, and in the middle of the 16th century it was represented in the first printed view of Cagliari, in the same position it still occupies today.
With the decline of the Victorian priory, in 1405 it returned to the archdiocese which, at the beginning of the 17th century, entrusted it to the archconfraternity of the Most Holy Trinity and Blood of Christ, who administered and cared for it continuously until the last post-war period.
In the first decades of the 17th century, the building was completely rebuilt according to the new counter-reform canons, taking on characteristics similar to those of other city churches built in the same years, with a single nave layout with six side chapels and barrel vaults. The square and raised presbytery was instead covered with an elegant hemispherical dome. The entrance opened on Via Barcellona, the neighborhood's main artery.
Over the centuries it was enriched with interesting works of art, now partly visible in the nearby Sant'Eulalia Treasure Museum. Another important restoration project dates back to the years 1910-1912, which gave the interior the new decorative apparatus visible in historical photos. Having twice escaped the partial demolition already foreseen by the regulatory plans of Gaetano Cima in 1858 and Giuseppe Costa in 1890, which provided for the expansion of Via Sardegna by removing the chapels on the south side, and leaving almost unscathed from the bombings of 1943, the church was then demolished almost completely by the Civil Engineers in 1947, as the new urban plans provided for the construction of a square in its place. The entire right side of the church survives with the three side chapels and the sacristy. In recent times, the ruin has returned to being the subject of attention by the scientific community and citizens, with interventions that have promoted its enhancement and a series of excavation campaigns that are returning important pieces of its long history.
