Aritzo, Ecomuseum of the Sardinian mountains or Gennargentu - Ethnographic Museum

Aritzo, Ecomuseum of the Sardinian mountains or Gennargentu - Ethnographic Museum

Aritzo, Ecomuseum of the Sardinian mountains or Gennargentu - Ethnographic Museum

located inside the lush “Pastissu” municipal park, it is a sui generis museum dedicated to the mountain communities of the western slope of Gennargentu, it houses a rich ethnographic heritage exhibited in eight rooms. The contents relate to the processes of acquisition, transformation, distribution and consumption - in time and space - of food resources, the traditional clothing sector, as well as the religious and religious-magic sector.
The themes embrace pastoralism, the activity of collecting and transforming snow and ice and the production of 'carapigna'.
The specific and distinctive materials of the Sardinian Mountain Ecomuseum, with respect to the material culture of the surrounding communities (which in other respects are similar to the Aritza community), are represented by four elements:
1. A rich collection of carved wedding cases and boxes that document, in numerous variations, one of the two types of wooden ark found in Sardinia, more commonly known as the “Aritzo or Barbaricina case”.
2. A wood carving production of refined artistic level by the Sardinian master of painting and engraving of the twentieth century, Antonio Mura.
3. The material culture of collecting snow and the production of carapigna, with its rare finds such as tin carapigners and wooden tubs dating back to the 18th century.
4. The ecomuseum itineraries that make the Aritzo Ecomuseum a widespread museum such as:
• “Su Caminu 'e is Niargios” the snow road, which leads from the village to the Funtana Cugnada mountain, where there are, at about 1500 meters above sea level, a dozen snowfields;
• The trails of transhumance such as “Su Camminu 'e is Brabaxinos”;
• The forest trails covered by hazelnut and chestnut harvesters.

Why it is important to visit it
The museum reconstructs with particular accuracy the typical environments of the peasant and pastoral civilization of the beginning of the century and the craft and commercial activities related to the culture of Barbagia - Mandrolisai, exhibiting original objects and furnishings. Among the rarest items in the collection, a collection of ancient chests used to store bread, linen, wheat and chestnuts, more commonly known as “Cassa di Aritzo” or “barbaric”. Also noteworthy is the presence of 17th-century tin sorbet jars and a hand-crafted oak pomace press.
