Villanovafranca, Su Mulinu Civic Archaeological Museum

Villanovafranca, Su Mulinu Civic Archaeological Museum

The museum is located in the renovated former Monte Granatico, built in the mid-nineteenth century, and exhibits finds from the countryside of Villanovafranca, dating between prehistory and the early Middle Ages.
The exhibition, with the aid of numerous graphic and photographic panels, illustrates the various phases of the ancient settlement in the area and includes ceramic, metallic, vitreous and lithic finds framed between the 4th millennium BC and the 3rd century AD. The materials found during the excavation campaigns conducted in the three-lobed Nuraghe Su Mulinu, located near the town, are of considerable interest. This fortress, in the evolution of its structures, offers a valuable compendium, unique in its kind, of the development of Nuragic architecture from the most archaic forms to the “tholos”.
In addition to the finds, referring to the various phases of the building's attendance, starting from the 16th century BC, the scenographic reconstruction of the extraordinary altar in the shape of a nuraghe, found in the central compartment of the fortress and dated to the 9th-8th century BC.

Why is it important to visit it
The museum offers the opportunity to deepen the knowledge of the Nuragic civilization in its complexity, linking material evidence to the monument from which they come. The highlight of the collection is the life-size cast of the Nuragic altar.
