Located in the territory of Siddi, about 330 meters above sea level, in the town of Sa Fogaia, on the east side of a basaltic plateau called Pranu de Siddi.
The park called “Sa Fogaia” is an area of natural and archaeological importance located within the municipal territory of Siddi, on the east side of a basaltic plateau of the countryside, called Pranu de Siddi, about 330 meters above sea level.
The area is characterized by a high naturalistic value due to the presence of numerous plant species, including endemic and rare ones, a varied wildlife; inside there is an important archaeological site and services to support its use.
The archaeological site is located at the end of the southern sector of the Giara di Siddi plateau, on a prominence whose view embraces the entire valley, in a position of domination and control.
It consists of a main monument and the traces of a village.
The main monument, made of volcanic rock, is formed by three bodies placed side by side, which form a single complex together with several smaller structures, with a forehead of more than 22 meters wide and a residual height of at least 6 meters.
The oldest building is a corridor-shaped protonurage with a three-lobed plan, almost a “Y” shape, with a raised entrance of about five meters, accessible by means of a staircase carved into the walls themselves. The internal compartment consists of a corridor currently under the open air: some residual steps testify to the original presence of an upper level (or a terrace) that has now disappeared. The other two added bodies lean against the central protonuraghe on the eastern and western sides, completely modifying its physiognomy. The eastern building is crossed by a mixed-roof corridor (tabular and ogival), marginalized by smaller rooms; the western body houses a circular tholos, with a steep staircase that goes up to the upper levels, and an additional connecting compartment with a quadrangular plan and an ogival roof, in turn divided into a small side cell. There is an inner courtyard that overlooked several smaller rooms; the long staircase of the oldest building also starts from it.
History of excavations
The archaeological site has been known in literature since the 19th century: Vittorio Angius, in describing the municipal territory of Siddi, reports that “three different surveys were noticed in the part of the hill that belongs to the Siddish, and one is called Sa Conca de sa Cresia, the other three-Nuragis, the third Sa Fogaia”. The protonuraghe was later the subject of a brief description by Lilliu in the early 1940s of the last century. Only relatively recently has it been the subject of systematic excavation campaigns by the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage for the provinces of Cagliari and Oristano during the years 1993, 1994: archaeological investigations have highlighted how the construction of the original nucleus can be traced back to the final Ancient Bronze, while towards the final stages of the Middle Bronze, a sudden abandonment took place.
