Sassari, EMA - Sea and Water Ecomuseum

The entrance to the EMA museum is located at the so-called “Palazzina Liberty”: a very pleasant period building in pastel colors that, if not exactly attributable to the true Art Nouveau style (which appeared on the European scene a decade after the inauguration of the complex, in 1880) recalls in its architectural lightness the golden period of the Belle Epoque, although the real aqueduct is actually made up of an underlying vast set of underground environments.
The Palazzina was built with a central body and wide wings, mainly to indicate the presence of such a historically important work for Sassari at the time.
The very long tunnel, a true exception of the museum, was dug into the mountain where a stream of water still passes through today whose flow forms the soundtrack of the entire complex. The very large barrel vaults of the vast tanks were designed to constitute a water reserve for a city of 32,000 inhabitants. The spectacular Duct Room, surmounted by tall multi-arched vaults, houses the original and remarkable cast iron pipes with their hardware, the collection channel that is lost in the mysterious “dragunare” (rivers of the city's subsoil) and the adjoining rises from the particular terracotta vault.
The entire work bears the signature of Claudio Luigi Ferrero, an engineer from Turin who designed the Aqueduct in its total development, starting with the dam (1878, a work of absolute avant-garde for the time), which still rises almost 20 meters today in the center of the bucolic Bunnari Valley (texts from the museum's official website).

Why is it important to visit it
Today, the entire complex is characterized as an authentic deposit of industrial archeology among the most important in Sardinia. The accessible area that can therefore currently be visited at the Palazzina includes some important environments such as, for example, one of the large tanks. As the tour progresses, it is possible to admire the sea and Latin sailing collections set up by aVela Tradizionale.
The usable area of the Building is completed with a large outdoor area including a square and a green area, which is intended to host events and activities for children and schools (texts from the museum's officialwebsite).
