Santa Maria Coghinas, Doria Castle

Santa Maria Coghinas, Doria Castle

Santa Maria Coghinas, Doria Castle

The territory of Santa Maria Coghinas is rich in archaeological documentation that dates back to prehistoric times. The town and the Doria castle are located at the foot of the hills that surround the plain crossed by the Coghinas River.
There is no documentary evidence about the erection of the castle. In the second half of the 13th century it was in the hands of the Doria family. In 1370 it was still efficient, involved in the events of the war between the Arborea and the Crown of Aragon. As early as the 15th century, it had to suffer a slow decline.
Only a tower, some sections of wall and a large tank remain of the fortification.

For Santa Maria Coghinas you can read the entry 'Coguinas' by Vittorio Angius for the Casalis' Dictionary '. This is followed by discussions of the Doria castle in general works on medieval Sardinian fortifications, such as those by Raimondo Carta Raspi (1933) and Foiso Fois (1992). More recent works by Giuseppe Meloni (1986), Pinuccia Simbula (1991) and Giancarlo Pes (2002).
