Samugheo, Unique Regional Museum of Sardinian Textile Art

The Museum is located on the outskirts of Samugheo, a center renowned for its thriving textile production, in a new building on two floors.
The Museum was founded in 2002 thanks to the desire to recover and preserve the historical textile memory of Sardinia, by finding artifacts mostly contained in the chests of houses in the town.
The permanent collection contains a vast repertoire of artifacts from different parts of the island: these are tablecloths, blankets, sheets, baby linen, linen for everyday use, saddlebags and towels for the countryside, bench covers, clothing for the shepherd and traditional costumes for parties.
The ground floor of the structure is dedicated to the organization of temporary exhibitions (set up every one or two months) with which we want to enhance the varieties and preciousness of the textile tradition, still handed down from mother to daughter, and which has remained vital to Samugheo.

Why is it important to visit it
The traditional craft activity, once so alive throughout the Sardinian community, has undergone a strong decline over time, but has remained vital in Samugheo. The guided tour therefore aims to recover and preserve the historical memory of the textile tradition of the whole of Sardinia. Among the most important pieces on display in the museum are five “tapinu 'e mortu” from the 18th century. These are rather rare textile funeral artifacts, considering that there are only eight of them on the whole island, including those in the Samugheo museum.
