Pula, Environmental Education Center “Laguna di Nora”

The Nora lagoon is located in the territory of the municipality of Pula, on the south-western coast of Sardinia. It covers an area of about 55 hectares and includes the branched system of canals and islets that characterize the mouth of its stream, the Arrieras River. The main body of water is separated from the sea by the natural peninsula of Fradis Minoris and by a long artificial embankment. The peninsula is an interesting example of a Tyrrhenian bench, covered by lush Mediterranean scrub vegetation and the typical flora of brackish wetlands. In this natural and landscape context, the Laguna di Nora center aims to educate about respect for the environment in general, with particular attention to the knowledge and culture of the sea, creating “opportunities”, meetings, multidisciplinary experiences that speak and make us reflect on the interactions between the different environmental components and teach to think in systems, educating in the sense of limits and responsibility for every action of the individual and simultaneously offering the opportunities for well-being related to protection and safeguarding the territory.

Why it's important to visit it
Of particular interest is the exhibition space: “Galleria dei Cetacei”, dedicated to the biology and ecology of whales and dolphins. The visit to the Gallery begins with the song of the whales, which will accompany the visitor throughout the journey, where the evolution of cetaceans is progressively illustrated, from their aquatic origins, to the terrestrial phase, until their return to the sea. In this space you can discover why, for cetaceans, the Mediterranean is such an important habitat, and learn more about the mysterious way these marine mammals communicate. Furthermore, what are the dangers that still threaten cetaceans today are also described, and much other information on their lifestyle habits.
