The building in which the port museum is housed was known in the past as “La Piccola”. It is a typical industrial building from the 20th century and was part of the former railway station, built in 1872. In particular, it was used as a warehouse for non-perishable goods which traveled with 'small speed' trains, on the contrary, passengers and perishable goods traveled with 'high speed' trains.
The Port Museum wants to contribute to the preservation of the memory of the port city through a collection of images, films and testimonies, which document the first and second half of the twentieth century, social changes, and the development of the port of Turin. The projections and the central plastic are enclosed by stained glass windows in the shape of a ship's hull. The model reproduces the town of Porto Torres in the early twentieth century, and the industrial port of the second twentieth century.
Why it's important to visit it
The Museum also houses the Memorial of the Battleship Roma and the Vivaldi and Da Noli ships, to remember the approximately 1700 seafarers who died following the sinking of the three boats in the Gulf of Asinara, on September 9, 1943.
