Ozieri, Taverna dell'Aquila Museum

The environment, furnished with naive taste, amazes with the richness of the materials exhibited according to a criterion perhaps based more on feeling than on modern museum teaching, but which nevertheless intrigues and quickly conquers the visitor. It is the result of the long research of Giuseppe Saba, a native of Ozieri, who collected, saving them from safe dispersion, a significant quantity of commonly used objects linked to peasant civilization and to the ancient craft shops of Ozieri. The Taverna dell'Aquila, an exhibition halfway between a tavern and an ethnographic museum, takes its name from an emblematic stuffed eagle, a gift from the family of the illustrious Ozierese painter Giuseppe Altana. The theme of the itinerary concerns craft activities, peasant civilization, wine collecting and mineralogy. The first room houses most of a collection of mostly local and national liquors and wines: a collection of more than 2500 liter bottles and about 700 mignon bottles. Among the most valuable pieces, a local wine from 1927, but above all a substantial representation of vermouths, bitters and spirits from the 40s, 50s and 60s with the original and attractive labels. Torquato Marogna's company, a local producer of carbonated drinks, is also remembered in an elegant seltzer siphon and with the display of a sample of soft drinks from the past, including the famous “spumetta”, a sort of Italian Coca-Cola. Some rosoli produced by the museum owner are also on display: the Brindel, the Dolce Sogno and the Allegretto di Ozieri, sweet provincial chatter companies, served in very minute vintage glasses. The dense exhibition includes the doctor's corner, the shoemaker's, blacksmith's and barber's shop. Among the tools of peasant culture, tools with a bizarre and obsolete name emerge from oblivion, such as the “ball breaker”, a kind of tritoothed shovel used to distribute fodder to animals or the “mosquito”, a particular plane for finishing soft stone cantons. There are also wrought iron keys, locks and handles, artistic electric ceramics in memory of the city's pride of having had the first power line in Sardinia (1907). An entire section is dedicated to household tools: primitive stoves made from a block of tuff, sieves and shovels for the production of typical Ozieri bread (the Sardinian esplanade) or radiators of all kinds and shapes. The collection of minerals and fossils from all over the world is worth mentioning.
