The building is located in an area of recent urban settlement, in the San Nicola area, corresponding to the site of the medieval village of Butule or Guzule.
The oldest mention of the church “sancti Nicholay de Guzuli” dates back to 1135, when it was the seat of the priory of the Vittorine monks in the Giudicato di Torres. The plant has a single-bay room perfectly oriented to E, built of volcanic stone in medium-sized ashlars.
Different building phases are identified. The church planted at the beginning of the 12th century was rebuilt in the last quarter of the 13th century. In the late Gothic era, it was restructured with a reversal of the liturgical axis. The ancient façade was located where the apse is now located, while the current façade is obtained with the remodeling of the ancient apse.
The original structures remain visible on the N side, where the wall is decorated with ogival arches set on peducci.
History of studies
Vittorio Angius quotes it under the heading “Ozieri” (1845). Francesco Amadu (1963) studies it as part of his research on the diocese of Bisarcio. Roberto Coroneo (1993) dedicates a card to her.
