The archaeological area is located on the S edge of the Sa Struvina basaltic plateau, at the mouth of the Mogoro river valley, in a dominant position on the Campidanese plain.
The complex consists of a nuraghe (Cuccurada B), a wall and an uncertain megalithic structure (Cuccurada A).
Cuccurada B is a polylobed building centered on a previous “corridor” nuraghe. It has a bastion with four towers connected by straight curtains (NS axis m 42; axis EO m 30; h max. res. m 16.80) that delimit a large central courtyard where access to the internal rooms of the monument opens.
The central nucleus, with an elongated reniform plan in the NO-SE direction, reveals various construction phases and restorations, and is divided into three parts. The “corridor” building is located in SE and shows two orthogonal passages and two small opposing cells (F1-F2), one of which has an integrated trunk-ogival roof. It has two entrances: one in the W on the courtyard and the other in E walled by a beam. The N-NO wing is divided into two overlapping floors, with a corridor-staircase with a flat roof that leads first to a landing and then goes up to a round bilobed room (A) with a niche raised to NO. The polylobed bastion is embedded in this structure through two straight courtyards connecting the circular tower N (B) with the “corridor” structure in E and with the two towers O (C) and OSO (D). Tower C has an elliptical 'tholos' raised above the courtyard. Tower D is accessible through a short corridor; the large circular inner room shows a small cell and two small niches.
A straight curtain connects tower D with tower S (E) missing, like the previous ones, a roof.
The structures delimit a pentagonal interior space closed to SE by a curtain that connects the building “in a corridor” with tower E and on which the entrance to the fortress opens. In the courtyard, remains of huts, probably from the final Bronze, have been found hanging over recent Bronze walls. Other huts have been highlighted outside the SE curtain.
A powerful beam reinforces the monument at Tower C and the “corridor” structure, the latter enhanced by a further renovation.
The excavation of the chamber of Tower D has returned an interesting stratigraphic sequence from the recent and final Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age, and of medieval reuse. A small bronze group dates back to the first iron at the apex of a typical Nuragic conical “button”, representing a hunting scene with an armed character who pierces a mouflon (?) bitten by a dog.
In the corridor leading to the courtyard, a votive style from the 4th century AD has also been revealed. Copious animal remains and objects (pins, ridges in bone, lamps, bronze coins, etc.) testify to a cultural reuse of the monument in late antiquity.
On the SW edge of the plateau, 15 km SW of Cuccurada B, there is a stretch of wall (length m 7.80; h max. m 2.70) in cyclopean basalt work, equipped with a narrow architraved entrance with an intrumural subrectangular compartment. The wall could date back, based on comparisons with other artifacts, to the recent Eneolithic (2400-2100 BC).
The Cuccurada A structure is located about 70 km S of Cuccurada B, on the extreme S edge of the plateau. Of uncertain definition, it has a sub-elliptical plan with a major axis NS (m 25.80x11.80).
In the archaeological area, there are also isolated discoveries of Ozieri materials (Final Neolithic, 3200 - 2800 BC) that attest to close contacts with the settlement of Puisteris, located on the other bank of the Mogoro River.

History of excavations
It was the subject of surface exploration, in the fifties of the twentieth century, by Giovanni Lilliu and Cornelio Puxeddu, and of excavations, in 1994-95 and 1996-99, by Enrico Atzeni, Riccardo Cicilloni, Giuseppina Ragucci and Emerenziana Usai. The excavations of the nuraghe are still in progress.

How to get
There From Oristano, take the road to Santa Giusta, cross the town and at the exit take the SS 131 in the direction of Cagliari. It takes about 62 km to the junction for Mogoro. Take the SP 44 for about km 2, at the second bend, or horseshoe bend, turn left and follow a narrow road that leads to the archaeological area, about 500 m. The nuraghe is also clearly visible from the SS 131.
