Iglesias, Museum of Mining Art

Iglesias, Museum of Mining Art

Iglesias, Museum of Mining Art

The museum, divided into a central lobby and two corners, is located in the basement of the “Asproni” Mining Institute, a valuable Liberty building, inaugurated on December 13, 1911 and built under the auspices of the engineer Giorgio Asproni, thanks to his generous loan of 100,000 pounds. The museum itinerary starts from the central entrance hall and continues in the areas that house the equipment for transporting the material, the explosives and the machines used for excavation and drilling. The exhibition, aimed at documenting and illustrating the world of mining in Sardinia, also includes an important collection of vintage photographic material, minerals, models and plastics, at scale, that have made the history of mining art.
The journey continues with the reconstruction of a small mechanical workshop and a visit to a flotation plant, for the treatment of minerals. The highlight of the collection, among all those on display, is the Montevecchio 2GH car shovel. It is also possible to walk through the renovated and secured sections of the educational gallery built by the same students, starting in 1934, using different techniques. The various sections of the tunnel branch off, for about 300 meters, below and outside the perimeter of the Institute. The basement was used, during the Second World War, as an anti-aircraft shelter, as an infirmary and an operating room in direct connection with the old Santa Barbara hospital. The museum's initiative was created mainly to communicate to the new generations that everything that is built with their work is to be considered as the basis for further civil and social improvements. It therefore becomes necessary and necessary to guarantee the preservation of this historical memory, especially with regard to the many workers who, with their sacrifices, have built on our island what is still called mining culture today.

Why it's important to visit it
The museum of mining art is an instrument for the dissemination, knowledge and preservation of everything that belongs to the historical memory of the enormous cultural heritage, created in more than two hundred years of mining history throughout Sardinia. The reconstruction of typical mining environments and the restoration and exhibition of the original machines, models and scale plastics, used by the Institute's students, have given life to an important scientific, human and cultural testimony of the Iglesiente.
