The Serbariu mining site, active from 1937 to 1964, characterized the economy of Sulcis and represented between the 1930s and 1950s one of the most important energy resources in Italy. The complex has been recovered and restored for museum and educational purposes, enhancing the site and making accessible the buildings and mining structures that today constitute the “Coal Museum”.
The Museum includes the rooms of the lamp shop, the underground gallery and the winch room. The lamp shop houses the permanent exhibition on the history of coal, the mine and the city of Carbonia; the large room houses a precious collection of mining lamps, work tools, tools, everyday objects, photographs, documents, vintage films and video interviews with miners. The underground tunnel shows the evolution of the coal cultivation techniques used in Serbariu from the 1930s to the cessation of activity, in environments faithfully rearranged with tools of the time and large machinery still in use today in active coal mines. Finally, the winch room preserves intact the large wheels of the winch with which they maneuvered the descent and ascent of the cages in the wells to transport miners and empty or loaded with coal sedans.
The museum is accessible to disabled visitors both in the lamp shop and, partially, in the underground gallery. The installation also includes tactile display cases with different types of lamps, helmets and fragments of coal extracted in the mine.
The Italian Center for the Culture of Coal (CICC) was founded in 2006 as an association between the Municipality of Carbonia and the Historical and Environmental Geominerary Park of Sardinia, with the aim of managing and enhancing the site of the Serbariu Great Mine.
Why it's important to visit it
The museum, through the exhibition in the Lampisteria and the guided tour underground, traces the history of the Great Mine of Serbariu with particular attention to the lives of the men and women who worked there.
