The name, in Campidanese Volpino, derives from the historical presence of an abundant colony of foxes. Then transformed from a natural forest reserve into a private possession of the Sanjust di Teulada family, in the 19th century it was afforested with Aleppo pine trees. It was acquired by the City Council in 1939 as the city's first urban park. The area underwent subsequent interventions in 1954 and the Eighties, including artificial lakes, sports areas and panoramic viewpoints. During the 20th century, it also housed military structures, including underground air force depots and anti-aircraft fortifications, which were abandoned in 2007. The Monte Urpinu Park is a large green hilly area that extends on the hill of the same name, on about 22 hectares. It has an articulated landscape, with dense vegetation consisting of wooded areas with mixed forest and bush. The area, delimited by gates and a fence wall, is divided into different functional areas connected by pedestrian avenues, panoramic paths, spaces equipped for leisure and sports, play areas, fitness trails and wildlife fences. Artificial elements such as small lakes with islets, bridges, areas with animals (peacocks, ducks, geese and turtles) are integrated with the naturalistic context. Artificial lakes constitute important micro-ecosystems that host a varied fauna: mallards, swans, water hens, geese, ducks, turtles and amphibians, while peacocks move freely in avenues and meadows, which have become a distinctive feature of the site. From the highest point of the park you can enjoy wide views of Cagliari, the Golfo degli Angeli, the pond of Molentargius and the Castle of San Michele. The entire space is accessible, equipped and managed by the City as a high-use urban park.
