The Cagliari Botanical Garden was established in 1866 as a scientific structure of the then Royal University of Cagliari, on the initiative of the botanist Patrizio Gennari, first director of the Garden, designed by the architect Gaetano Cima. During the twentieth century, the garden underwent expansions, reorganizations and collectibles.
It covers an area of about 5 hectares within an area rich in archaeological pre-existence and overlooking the southern side of the Roman Amphitheater. The planimetric conformation of the garden is set on a main visual axis that, starting from the monumental entrance, leads along the axis to the archaeological site, creating a compositional and symbolic connection between botanical science and ancient history. Inside the garden, there are several important architectural and landscape elements: among these are the ancient Roman and Punic tanks, integrated into the exhibition itinerary, the so-called “Grotta Gennari” probably a Roman calidarium, and some nineteenth-century architectural structures such as greenhouses, pavilions, tubs and hydraulic artifacts. The monumental furniture includes columns, fountains and ornamental tubs, including the Water Lily Tub, the Lotus Tub and the Papyrus Tub, arranged along the central avenue. Water architecture, ancient and modern, plays a decisive role both in the climate management of the garden and in its aesthetic and symbolic value.
The plant heritage is divided into three main sectors: Mediterranean flora, tropical and subtropical flora and a very rich collection of succulent plants. The palm grove, with more than 60 specimens of 16 species, represents one of the most important collections of the genus at the national level. The presence of endemic and rare Sardinian plants, preserved in specially shaped rocks, is also significant. In addition to its scientific and conservative function, the Cagliari Botanical Garden plays a fundamental cultural and educational role. The presence of the Garden of the Simple, with medicinal plants and explanatory panels also in Braille, testifies to an inclusive and informative approach.
