Cagliari, Lazaretto di Cagliari

The Lazaretto di Cagliari is located in one of the most suggestive places in the city, in front of the sea, in the village of Sant'Elia, on the slopes of the Colle di Sant'Ignazio.
From 1600 to 1800, it was a place of refuge for forty-year-olds, presumed carriers of epidemic diseases such as the plague, smallpox, typhoid and scrofula.
Its history was written under the Kingdom of Aragon and ended under the Savoy dynasty, at the same time as the birth of the Kingdom of Italy. Famous people who, despite themselves, visited it: Canon Giovanni Spano and the French general Alexandre Charles Perregaux.
During the Second World War, following the bombing of Cagliari in 1943, the Lazzaretto was used as a refuge for displaced people, who gave rise to the first nucleus of the population that still lives in the village of Sant'Elia.
Restored in 1998 by the Venetian architect Andrea de Echer and used as the headquarters of a multipurpose art and culture center, which today hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural events of various kinds, artist residencies, conference and training activities. The space hosts a permanent exhibition on the structure of the Lazaretto yesterday and today.

Because it is important to visit
the Cagliari Lazaretto, the Multipurpose Center for Art and Culture hosts temporary exhibitions and exhibitions, offers space rental, conference area, workshops, training activities, entertainment activities, concerts, reading space and educational activities, nature excursions, cafeteria space and more.
