The Cagliari Public Gardens are among the oldest green spaces in the city, built starting in 1840 on an area purchased by the Municipality and transformed from rocky terrain into public space with sinuous avenues, ornamental flower beds and trees according to the romantic nineteenth-century taste. In 1933, the Municipal Art Gallery was inaugurated (in the building of the former Royal Powder Mill designed by Carlo Boyl di Putifigari in 1828) designed by the architect Ubaldo Badas, giving a marked cultural vocation to the entire area. Originally conceived as a romantic garden, they were then acquired by the City in 1840 and subject to numerous transformations that have changed their appearance and function over time. During the 20th century, in particular between 1928 and 1933, the architect Ubaldo Badas intervened by designing the monumental entrance that connects the gardens with Largo Giuseppe Dessì. During the 2000s, significant restorations were carried out, aimed at preserving the historic plant and enhancing historic tree species, including magnolioid ficus, jacarande and palm trees, in addition to the recovery of furniture and fountains. The area has always played a fundamental social and cultural function for the city, hosting exhibition events and moments of aggregation. The Cagliari Public Gardens are the oldest historic park in the city of Cagliari, as well as one of the first examples of nineteenth-century public green spaces in Sardinia. Located between the districts of Castello and La Vega, they cover an area of almost two hectares. The original layout included a central tree-lined avenue, about 300 meters long, in line with the ancient Royal Polveriera. The monumental entrance frames the central avenue on whose sides there are large lawns. On the right side, along the walls that overlook Viale San Vincenzo, a smaller driveway is bordered by a row of jacaranda trees. The garden stands out for its landscape composition, characterized by a mixed vegetation of Mediterranean and exotic essences. Along the main avenue there are elements of historical and ornamental furniture, benches and, in the direction of the Municipal Gallery, a series of nineteenth-century sculptures and two ornamental marble fountains composed of two large geometrically shaped tubs in which are placed the bronze and terracotta sculptures entitled The Sleepers, created by the artist Mimmo Paladino.

The Cagliari Public Gardens are a precious nineteenth-century park that combines formal and naturalistic elements. Several monumental trees stand out, such as the two ficus macrophylla and a specimen of Judah's thorn, more than 200 years old and a jacaranda more than 100 years old. The variety of native and exotic species creates an environment rich in biodiversity, making the park an important historical, cultural and environmental heritage to be protected and valued.
