The Cagliari University Library was established in 1764 and built, at the behest of King Carlo Emanuele III of Sardinia, in the building erected above the Bastion of the Balice. A special conservation and reading room called the Great Room, today an eighteenth-century room, was reserved for the Library, furnished with elegant lacquered and gilded shelving.
The Cagliari University Library, which, due to the rarity, value and richness of its documentary and book collections, is considered the most important in all of Sardinia, in its enormous bibliographic heritage it also houses a significant number of manuscripts, more than 6000 units including codes, documents, letters and loose scrolls, 238 incunabula and more than 5000 sixteenth century.
