The Museum of Contemporary Art in Buddusò, now also an ethnographic museum, for years has hosted only wooden sculptures, the fruit of the various international symposiums of the 70s/90s. Subsequently, thanks to a new organic and systematic project, the Municipal Administration, in collaboration with “Su Logu de sa Connoschenzia”, made it possible to integrate a new, broader museum itinerary, documenting local history, historical, cultural and social events since the beginning of the 20th century.
Set up on the outskirts of Buddusò, in central Sardinia, the museum of contemporary ethnographic art encompasses 19th and 20th century Sardinian culture and traditions.
The tour takes place in a single environment through an area of about 400 square meters divided into four sections in which Buddusoine folk life and traditions are represented.
The initial part of the itinerary introduces the visit through the screening of a documentary, lasting about 40 minutes, dedicated to the town of Buddusò, made by Rai 3 for the Geo&Geo broadcast in 2000. Continuing on, you can admire “live” the tangible signs of local Sardinian culture: traditional costumes, everyday clothes and those worn in ceremonies, textile artifacts produced with traditional looms, a vast collection of tools for processing milk, cheese and ricotta, breads and sweets.
A section documents the 1950s: in particular, the construction of the “Sos Canales” artificial dam is described with the transition from a barter economy to a monetary one and the subsequent economic, social and cultural transformation of the Buddusoine center. There are also carved handicrafts by the well-known “Mastru Mimmio Solinas” on display and there are many photos that document both a developing rural town and the various artisanal activities of the 1950s, such as “La Carbonaia” and that of the Stonemasons.
Along the route, which runs through the various exhibition areas, the visitor has the opportunity to follow the entire cycle of sculpture, from the artistic period from 1984 to 2004, which includes bas-relief and all-round wooden sculptures, mostly Sardinian chestnut and very hard African Iroko.
The works that every artist has left arranged, not only in the museum but also along the ancient streets of the town, are the product of inspiration coming from the places, people, culture, traditions, colors and scents of this territory. Every artist has come into contact with this country, its stories, its legends, its songs, its food and wine by interacting with its inhabitants and collaborating with the local artisans.
Why it's important to visit it
The museum on its journey leads to the discovery of the 'material and immaterial' traditions, of the ancient and modern history of the Buddusò community, recounting the events that have characterized its cultural, economic and social journey. Enriched with an ethnographic exhibition showing the historical phases of the town of Buddusò, it is rich in sculptural works made of granite and wood.
