Bosa, Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli

The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is located in an area that was once peripheral but now incorporated by the urban development of the city, N/O compared to the oldest settlement, accessed from Corso Garibaldi.
The building is part of the convent complex of the PP. Cappuccini founded in Bosa on the initiative of Bishop Manca De Cedrelles and the city councilors in 1608. The first stone was laid on the day of the Conception of the Virgin (December 8).
On the only barrel-covered aisle, on the right wall, there are three chapels facing like a cross. The presbytery, with a stucco altar, is accessed through a short staircase decorated on the sides by lions, also made of stucco; it has a barrel shaped like the nave and extends into the semicircular apse, receiving light from a large window.
The general concept of the building belongs to that syncretistic phase of Sardinian architecture in which the predominant lines expressing simplified manneristic codes are combined with traditional Gothic structures (in this case the roofs of the chapels). But the measure of space is also of Renaissance conception, defined inside by the frame that marks the structure of the vaults and outside by the façade surmounted by a triangular tympanum at the center of which an oculus opens, in line with an underlying rectangular opening and with the portal of neofifteenth-century form.
The recent restorations involving the convent and the church have partly distorted the original forms of the cult building, with a reduction in the presbytery and a raising of the pavement of the aisle (raised to the level of that of the chapels) and the subsequent disappearance of the tombs of the friars.
