The Sardinian territory, rich in evidence of the past, interested scholars of the subject since the dawn of archeology.
In the beginning, attention to the island's antiquities was mainly antiquarian and only in the 19th century, with the studies and work of Canon Giovanni Spano, did a modern approach to matter be acquired. Lo Spano, as a tireless researcher, investigated the major sites of the island and collected the results of his studies in the journal “Bullettino Archeológico Sardo”.
In the same century, General Alberto Lamarmora began studying and cataloguing the geographical, zoological, archaeological, historical and ethnological aspects of the entire island. He published two very important works ('Journey to Sardinia' and 'Itinerary of the Island of Sardinia'), which constituted a real 'sum' of knowledge about the island.
In 1903, Antonio Taramelli arrived in Sardinia, as director of the Cagliari Museum. His activity on the island lasted more than thirty years, during which he investigated, with numerous excavations, the Sardinian territory. In more recent years, the archaeological research and investigations conducted by Giovanni Lilliu have contributed decisively to the interpretation of the numerous prehistoric settlements and the oldest Sardinian history.
Finally, in recent decades, thanks to the rigorous application of the stratigraphic method, the use of modern excavation technologies and a careful interpretation of historical sources, it has been possible to reconstruct the history and events of the areas investigated.
Currently, throughout the Sardinian territory, there are numerous sites where archaeological investigations are underway, just as the number of finds being studied by archaeologists is conspicuous.
