The building is located along Corso Italia, near other service buildings and was built starting in February 1934 by the Works Service of the Sardinian Reclamation Company on a design by the Roman architect Giovanni Battista Ceas inspired by Rationalism.
Inaugurated the following year, it is a symbol of the founding cities of the fascist era. The Casa del Balilla, later the home of the G.I.L., has a central block, which housed the gym, changing rooms and offices on the two floors, and connects to two reinforced concrete wings that frame a large outdoor pool in the back. In the façade, the lower part, with the large entrance and the long ribbon windows, is covered with exposed bricks, while at the top it has a smooth and clear plaster wall with six circular windows.
The building was altered at the end of the sixties of the twentieth century with heavy interventions that compromised the unity of the design, especially in the interiors, erasing in particular a circular pool, delimited by a series of staggered brick pillars inside the atrium that led to the pool. A restoration has the task of restoring the characteristics of the building.
Laterally to the Casa del Balilla stands the Casa del Fascio, arranged on two floors and completed on the left side by the tall littoria tower with a square plan, with a round arch. The rectangular building has a slightly raised ground floor that falls back, allowing the opening of a porch with exposed brick pillars.
Here, too, the use of exposed brick and clear plaster differentiates the parts from a chromatic point of view, standing out as a recurring architectural motif in the designer.
