In the last quarter of the 20th century, construction activity in Sardinia ranged in various areas, from residences to external accommodations, from the setting up of museums to shopping centers. However, there is a lack of attention to the redevelopment of public spaces, whose few interventions fluctuate between the use of urban furniture and a design separated from the environmental context.
An example in this sense is the lack of opportunity for the “square for Cagliari”, built around the project by Renzo Piano, winner of the competition for the headquarters of the Sardinian Industrial Credit.
The competition, which saw the participation of 114 groups of designers, restores a vision close to the reality of the situation of the architecture of the Eighties, divided into currents and groupings, and was resolved with the victory of Piano, who in the design design (motto “Phoenix”) presented, in front of the building, a tensostructure (never built) linked to a “windy” and dynamic image of the city.
The building, built between 1987 and 1992, stands out for the high quality of the details and the functionality of the flexible and technologically advanced interiors, focusing attention on the artifact, unlike what was proposed in the project by Alberto Sposito, awarded ex aequo (motto “Alloro”), which involved the reconfiguration of the surrounding space with a wider scope thanks to an axis directly connected to the
