Between the 19th and 20th centuries, Italian established itself as the main language in island literary production, an inevitable choice in order to expand the readership. At the same time, the Sardinian language continued to be used in poetic works and above all studied and disseminated thanks to the philology and linguistics studies of Max Leopold Wagner and Giovanni Spano.
