The development of cities

The history of the Roman urbanization of Sardinia begins long before the moment when, in 238 BC, the island came under direct Roman rule. In fact, it is probable that already in the 6th century BC, the first treaty between Rome and Carthage established the possibility for Rome to exercise its commercial trade in Sardinia.

It is therefore not surprising that the foundation of the Roman colony of Feronia (Posada) on the east coast of the island can already be placed chronologically in the 4th century BC.
However, it was after 227 BC, when Sardinia became a Roman province, that the real process of Roman urbanization of the island began, which will assume the function of a powerful vehicle for the implementation of the Romanization process of Sardinia.

The previously founded cities were renovated in their structure and building system according to the traditional Roman urban model, focusing on the space of the forum and on the road axes called 'cardo' and 'decumanus'. The port, in the coastal centers, will obviously play a crucial role even in Roman times.

Theaters and amphitheaters (such as in Nora and Karales), thermal baths (such as Forum Traiani, today's Fordongianus, and in Porto Torres, today's Turris Libisonis), temples (such as in Antas near Fluminimaggiore), bridges and aqueducts were built.
